Individuals beat the electricity grid with amazing new solar battery technology
On Wednesday, 11 May 2016, a Tesla Powerwall compact solar battery will be installed in Avalon, NSW by Solarpro. The Powerwall enables individuals to use the solar power they generate at night or during expensive peak hours. The technology will revolutionise the solar industry.
“Typically most electricity is needed in the morning or evening when solar power is not being generated. Storing solar power in batteries has long been a solution to the problem, but the batteries have been large and expensive”, said David Veal, Managing Director, of Solarpro, one of the first Certified Tesla Energy Installers in Sydney.
The Tesla Powerwall is a lithium-ion battery that is compact and wall mounted. The battery is charged by electricity generated from solar panels during daylight hours. This electricity can then be used at night or during expensive peak hours.
Currently solar owners have to purchase electricity from the grid at up to 45 cents per kilowatt hour during peak times, while the solar power they generate is bought by the same electricity retailers for only 6 cents/kWh.
“Critics of solar power, while acknowledging its environmental benefits, say that it is not a viable source of electricity because it can’t be used at night. That argument ended today.” David said.
