Up to 15c/kWh for Solar Power

IPART  has set the benchmark range for solar feed-in tariffs at 11.9 to 15 cents per kilowatt hour (c/kWh) for the year starting 1 July 2017.  The new range is double the current amount and a more realistic price for solar power.  However, it is the wholesale price range and it is up to electricity retailers to make the decision to adopt it.

“With electricity prices set to rise again in July, this is good news for customers who have not been receiving a fair amount for the solar power they contribute to the grid.  The timing is great if you have been considering solar for a while. There are calls for the benchmark range to be made mandatory to ensure retailers offer the higher price. Solarpro hopes electricity retailers will act without legislation and offer the higher price to their solar producing customers as AGL has done.

AGL has already announced that their NSW customers will receive a solar feed-in-tariff of 11.1c/kWh from 1 July 2017 compared to the current 6.1 c/kWh. This is an increase of 82%.  In a statement AGL said:

“The changes will help to offset the impact of higher prices in some states and deliver savings to customers with solar panels…….Solar feed-in tariffs are the rates paid for electricity that is fed back into the grid from a domestic renewable electricity generation source, such as a rooftop solar.

“Australia has the highest rate of household solar installation in the world, with over 15 percent of Australian homes hosting solar panels in 2017.

As the uptake of solar continues to increase, especially as costs associated with solar PV decrease, AGL is making changes that offer customers significant savings and better value for contributing clean energy to Australia’s electricity generation mix.”

Latest Solar Inverter Technology

For the solar industry, the HD wave inverter has been likened to the change from large tube televisions to digital flat screen TVs.  Current SolarEdge inverters are already among the smallest in the World.  However, like all existing inverters they require magnetics and cooling components that require space.  The HD wave technology substantially reduces this requirement which significantly decreases the inverter size and weight while achieving record efficiency.

What you get with Powerwall 2

Solar Battery

Twice the size of Powerwall 1, with a capacity of 13.5kWh, this is one of the largest home storage batteries available. Powerwall 2 has a liquid thermal control system that regulates its internal temperature to maximise battery performance in any climate. It stores excess solar power to be used in the evening when electricity prices are higher.

Internal Battery Inverter

Powerwall 2 has a built-in battery inverter.  However, unless you connect it to an existing solar system you will have to purchase a solar inverter and panels in additional to the battery.  Solarpro recommends the SolarEdge optimised solar system.  If you prefer a string system, Fronius is a good choice and we can optimise the solar panels for you by adding some simple technology. Optimised panels operate independently rather than in a string and can deliver up to 25% more solar power.

 Power Back-up

There are two versions of Powerwall 2 available.  One has a backup facility to provide power to selected appliances in the event of a power black-out.  The other does not have a backup facility.  If you want the backup or think you might in the future, it is important to choose that system.  The one without backup cannot have it added later.

Monitoring

Tesla has already launched a new version of the My Tesla website & mobile app which includes solar system monitoring and Powerwall 2 integration.  The app has a Power Flow screen which shows real-time data on solar power generation, storage and consumption.

Largest SolarEdge residential install

Solarpro has completed the largest residential SolarEdge installation in Australia. The 30kW system has been installed in Terrey Hills, NSW and boasts six SE5000 inverters and 90 LG320W solar panels.

SolarEdge is an optimised solar system that produces up to 25% more power than string systems. The installation comes at a time when larger amounts of solar power and clever use of solar batteries could see households really benefiting from their investment in solar.

NSW Energy Minister Don Harwin has been quoted saying that solar generation is now worth more and that he has asked the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) to update the benchmark tariff for solar power that is fed to the energy grid.

A draft proposal has been released outlining a feed-in tariff range of 11.6 to 14.6 cents per kilowatt hour.  This is double the 2016 benchmark range of 5.5 to 7.2 cents per kilowatt hour.

Cheap Solar Hot Water

If you have a SolarEdge power system you can install a device that will use excess solar power to heat your hot water at a quarter of the price of a solar hot water system.  The device effectively turns any standard electric hot water tank into a solar tank.
